shibuya-kei was a micro-genre of avante-garde japanese pop rock that exploded in popularity in the early 90s to the year 2000. the scene was centralized in, of course, shibuya, tokyo, and was heavily associated with the music and fashion of 1960s europe, particularly mod style, bossa nova, and french ye-ye.
